Where our water goes

A little history – 1986 the year it all went!

Following on from Ian Campbell’s article in the last CentreBoard I thought you would be interested in these photos of the lake taken when it was drained and deepened in 1986.

The lake had an irregular bottom, and as it was to be used as a reservoir it was dug to a uniform five metres in depth, which allowed those who enjoyed capsizing, and turning turtle, to do so without the mast hitting the bottom.

Whilst the work was being carried out, the Club was given the use of Ivy Lake over the road for our sailing activities, and as far as I can remember we sailed there for just one season. The fish (as if you would be interested) were netted in the pools which were created when the lake was drained and the pike moved to the small lake in Snails Lane and others to Ivy lake, no doubt to the delight of the pike already in Ivy Lake. The new lake was then restocked.

On Completion, Wessex Water, or was it then known as Bournemouth Water, provided the Club with new slipways, the concrete quay in front of the Club house, and our pontoons.

Whilst writing this I am thinking ‘have I really been a Spinnaker member for 20 years’. Those days with my kids in their Oppies have long gone, but the memories then are very clear and enjoyable, and I am so pleased that the Club Oppies still thrive.
