Spinnaker Optimist News

Attention Spinnaker Optimist Sailors
Don't forget that you can still sail on Sundays. Two races with Oppy starts. With the Spinnaker/Warsash Optimist Challenge Trophy scheduled for 24 January 2004, now is a good time to get some practice in. I have it on good authority that there will be goodies for
everyone who finishes a race.

Spinnaker Optimist Open
The Spinnaker Open, 20 September, once again proved to be a very popular event with 63 helms registering. Matthew Rainback, Poole S.C. took the honours in the Main Fleet (29 entries) coming home one point ahead of second placed Philip Sparks from Lymington. Ollie Manton, who won the Spinnaker Open Regatta Fleet last year (obviously likes our trophies) came third. The first Spinnaker sailor home was Joshua Irons placed 4th.

34 sailors entered the Regatta Fleet with Spinnaker taking the first three places. Well done Tara Gill-Taylor (1st), Toby MacKean (2nd) and Isabel Quicke (3rd). I expect to see a repeat in the Main Fleet next year.

The Parker-Mowbray family excelled with Charlotte being the first girl home in the Main Fleet (7th) and James being the first non-Spinnaker helm home in the Regatta Fleet (4th).

Thank you everyone, helms and helpers, for making this a truly special day.

IOCA Flotilla Team Racing 2003
Spinnaker entered two teams for this event and we just missed out on a quarter-final place. The Spinnaker All-stars (Richard Bunt, Joshua Irons, Tara Gill-Taylor) and Spinnaker Flyers (Edward Morris, Team Captain, Maya Gill-Taylor, Isabel Quick) gave members of the National Squad something to think about. Well done Young Spinnaker. On behalf of our 'Optimist Team Racers' I would like to say a special thank-you to Tom Clay for his excellent coaching leading up to this event. Tom, a quarter-final place next year is required!

Spinnaker well represented at Rutland
Six Spinnaker helms represented the Club at the End of Season Championships, Rutland Water 11/12 October. Well done Richard Bunt, Joshua Irons, Maya Gill-Taylor (Main Fleet) & Tara Gill-Taylor, Matthew Wallis, Ben Wallis (Regatta Fleet), particularly on the Sunday when conditions were difficult.

Girl's Only Training
Kirsty Bonar (Team GBR/Optimist National Squad Coach) gave another excellent training session at Spinnaker on 18 October. This was the second training day with Kirsty this year and was again well supported with 10 very enthusiastic young ladies.

IOCA Inland Championships Grafham Water 15/16 May 2004
This may seem a long time away but we should be thinking about this event now. In addition to the IOCA Optimist Training Programme, I intend to arrange some additional 'Open Circuit' training for you at Spinnaker. I can confirm that Kirsty Bonar will be back at the Club just before the Inlands to give you a tune-up session. Would you please let me know if you are planning on attending the Inlands. If necessary I can arrange for another National Coach to be available prior to the event to assist Kirsty.
