Race Hut

For some time we have considered that the race hut is due for renewal, as it is often very wet inside. The building is defective, and many attempts to make it waterproof have all failed. The solution would appear to be to demolish and rebuild with the ridge going the other way, perhaps a bit bigger. I would like to invite members to propose to some ideas concerning size, and whether to have an additional store or computer room, or protest room or whatever. I am sure those members who have been PRO all have ideas, which will be very useful. Paul Mathews

The Main Committee has given outline approval for this investment but prefers to postpone the work until a consensus has been reached on needs and specifications. All suggestions welcome! - Ed

Wessex Winter Warmer 2004

16 of the best team racing teams in the UK were invited to the annual Wessex Winter Warmer, run by Southampton University and Spinnaker Club. Among the teams were the top 4 from last year’s UKTRA finals: Spinnaker, New Forest Pirates, Royal Thames and F Club 6, who along with two West Kirby teams, Wessex Exiles and Itchenor exiles and the top uni teams meant competition was going to be tough.

The teams were split into 4 leagues of 4, which would seed the teams for the later group stages. Saturday saw some very close racing in good conditions, with New Forest Pirates, Royal Thames, Spinnaker and West Kirby coming out on top of their groups. On the second day all the group winners raced each other, as did all the 2nd place teams and so on. At the end of this the Pirates came out on top, with Royal Thames in second. In dying winds the decision was taken to go straight to quarterfinals. In the first quarterfinal the Pirates were pushed hard by West Kirby 2, but emerged with a 2-1 victory. Itchenor Exiles overcame Spinnaker, West Kirby beat Wessex Exiles, and F Club 6 defeated Royal Thames, all in extremely close ties. The semis saw the Pirates and Itchenor in some of the closest racing of the weekend, which certainly got the umpires’ attention. The Pirates emerged victorious, but knew they had been in a fight. In the other Semi Final West Kirby saw off F Club 6. This set up a final between the New Forest Pirates, who have dominated team racing of late, their last defeat being at the UKTRA finals last year, and resurgent and still fairly new West Kirby team. In the first race West Kirby looked to have it won with a 2,3,4 combination going up the last beat, but Owen Modral turned his tacking engine on and stormed through to give the Pirates victory. They went on to win the final and the championships. All in all it was a good weekend in tough wind conditions and showed how much strength in depth there is in team racing at the moment with 9 or 10 top teams all capable of beating each other.

Results:- 1st, New Forest Pirates, 2nd, West Kirby, 3rd, Itchenor Exiles
