Spinnaker Lasers

By the time you read this report the summer season will be well underway. Turnouts for the spring season were disappointing with the first few weeks characterised by gale force winds making the prospect of an early swim inevitable with only the hardiest of our sailors venturing out. The following weeks were equally unattractive being generally wet with light winds. The best turnout so far has been the Greyfriars Cup Handicap held on Sunday, 25 April when 10 Lasers competed in the second race. Despite glorious sunshine the wind was relatively light and this favoured the Solo's who dominated the prizes. Well done to a new Club member who was third over the line in the second race holding off Peter May, and to Sam Downing who was third in the final race.

The Laser South Coast Grand Prix started with the first event on 18 April at Chichester. Jonathon Burns was our only Club representative coming 12 out of 25 in the standard rig. On 1 May several fleet members made the trip to Castle Cove.

The 4.7 rig is continuing to attract new fleet members. Welcome is extended to James Muir and to Richard Bunt. We hope they enjoy sailing the 4.7 rig format and will join in with the standard and radial fleets in the Travellers Series. Edward Morris and James Anderson represented the Club at the recent meeting at Pwllheli in Wales. Edward did particularly well considering he is a relative newcomer to the class.

Set out below are important dates for your diary. Please remember that to qualify for the Travellers Series you need to compete in 5 of the Grand Prix Events in the same rig. Please don't do what James Clay did and do 4 in one rig and 1 in a different rig, as it won't count, James! I would also suggest that the Club Championship at Swanage on 26/27 June is a must. There will be a big fleet, but the top sailors from the Laser's different rigs are excluded from competing. This event is a very friendly affair and gives the opportunity to sail in a big fleet without the pressure on our doorstep! Please also make a note to represent the Club in the Quadrangle Trophy, which this year will be held at Mudeford in September. Spinnaker won it back last year, but elected to have the event sailed in Christchurch Harbour to ensure full support from the other clubs. Peter May

Letter from Peter Sweet

Letter from Peter Sweet

Dear Brenda,

Thank you for your letter of 24 February. I am glad to see the Oppys continue to flourish. As you probably know it was when I was Commodore I introduced the Optimist to Spinnaker, living at that time at Cuckoo Hill, up the road at South Gorley. I managed the British Optimist Team at the International Championships at Turku, Finland in 1964, I think it was. My son Nicholas and Sally Fox also of Spinnaker, made half of the British Team!

Born here in the Forest, schooled at Ballard, and though a regular soldier I have always been based here serving non-stop for 15 years up at Larkhill from Captain to Colonel!

As a Commoner and for some years turning my stock on Ibsley, I am often over your way and call in from time to time, but as you say don’t know many of the current membership.

When I sold Cuckoo Hill to Sarah Miles, and moved to Boldre, though having a boat at Lymington, a cruiser, I often was over.

I look forward to receiving the Year Book and Newsletter in due course.

Yours,
Peter Sweet
