Comments from your new Commodore

Winter is normally the time to get all those boat repairs, and any maintenance up together. If you are sailing a full programme through the season, like me, you will have a few battle scars on your boat, which need attention. Now, though, is the time to get the boat out of the garage (or dining room) and into its slot in the boat park. The first Club series started on 22 February, and those who are made of stronger metal have been out and enjoyed some very lively wind conditions.

Whilst many of us have been preparing our boats for the new season there have been activities on the lake during most weeks. All but three weeks of the winter period have had an organised event, and it is this Club activity, which intensifies through the season that makes Spinnaker a popular and thriving Club, with membership (against the national trend) increasing.

At the AGM in December I took over the position of Commodore from Ian Campbell who so capably steered the Club forward during the previous three years. Hywel Morris also joined the Main Committee as Vice Commodore, bringing with him a vast experience from his period on the Sailing Committee.

The Main Committee is constantly endeavouring to improve all the various aspects of the Club and its environment for the enjoyment of all members of all standards and all ages. As you are no doubt aware the Club spent a considerable sum of money last year purchasing a new flight of six Fireflies to replace those bought some six years ago, a new RIB, and a new workshop and store. This year the Committee will consider the replacement of the start hut, and July is when we can expect to see the belt of conifer trees in the south eastern corner of the lake being felled, along with much of the undergrowth and willows on the eastern shoreline. We shall all look forward to losing the wind shadow created by the trees and be able utilise the far corner for racing.

The time has come to launch your boat and enjoy, we hope, good weather and a good sailing season. There is a full programme of sailing ahead to suit all members. I shall be there in my Solo, so come and join in the fun. Brian Watkins
