BSDRA Spinnaker Club managed to field two teams for the BSDRA Southern Region Championships held at the Club on 22 May. The day saw tense and close racing across the board. Spinnaker A were narrowly pipped by Canford A in the semi-final. Sevenoaks won overall. The picture shows Canford School’s Rob Foxell (No. 6) cleaning up the Sevenoaks team on the line. Toppers and Picos at Spinnaker Toppers and Picos competed at the joint Open on Sunday, 18 July. The weather was unexpectedly good, starting with a forecast 5mph wind. It got stronger later giving progressively better sailing as the day went on. Race One for the Toppers got under way in a variable breeze, and George Beck, from Papercourt snatched the lead from local sailor Paul Irons on the last lap, followed by James Muir, to win. Race Two followed on almost at once, and Alan Roberts from Hayling Island had clearly now mastered the intricacies of the lake and won from local sailor Stephen Broom (Just back from 4th place at the Solo Nations Cup in Garda), who was getting attuned to an unfamiliar boat, whilst Beck came 3rd. The afternoon racing brought slightly stronger breezes with the odd gust and more sunshine. Roberts recorded another first, closely pursued by the 2 local Solo sailors, Broom and Irons in 2nd and 3rd. The wind was by now clearly favouring those with a bit more weight and experience, George Beck, just into his teens recording a couple of poor races, and in Race 4 Paul Irons had got his borrowed boat in the groove and won from Roberts, who just squeezed past Broom at the last mark to take 2nd, with Catherine Whitehill of Papercourt finishing 4th, having been progressively moving up the fleet during the day. Topper Results: 1st Alan Roberts (Hayling Island), 2nd Paul Irons (Spinnaker), 3rd Steve Broom (Spinnaker), 4th George Beck (Papercourt). Picos competed for the first time on the lake, as an experimental toe-dipping event, which turned out to be well worthwhile, with those competing – many for the first time, enjoying a very pleasant days sailing, and all sailing single-handed with the standard rig. Gaby Burns of Spinnaker won both morning races, with Hywel Morris coming 2nd in both. The afternoon was a slightly greater test for both Gaby and Hywel; in the third race Matthew Hales, coping remarkably well in the stronger winds, at the age of just 13, beat them both. The last race was won by Tony Mayhew, however Gaby and Hywel only yielded one place in each case, and their consistency paid off in the end, but with good close racing. Pico Results: 1st Gabrielle Burns, 2nd Hywel Morris, 3rd Matthew Hales, 4th Tony Mayhew. Paul Irons |

Mirrors at Spinnaker The annual Mirror Southern Traveller at Spinnaker on 18 July saw 12 boats enjoy some excellent racing in better weather than that forecasted. Race one eventually got away after a wait for the wind to stabilise. Spinnaker’s Bill Bacon made the most of the still shifting conditions to take an early lead. In hot pursuit, Poole juniors Silvania Booth and Jenny House, closely followed by fellow club members Josh Rumbol and Tom Davidson. The second race saw Warsash boats leading from the start, with national Squad Members Tom Robinson and Shaun Mason leading from father and son pair, Simon and James Lovesey. The afternoon racing bought an increase in wind and planing conditions in the gusts. Tom and Shaun again led the race, but after a close battle with Silvania and Jenny eventually finished second, with Josh and Tom third. By the last race, the event was still wide open, with five boats battling it out for podium positions. Josh and Tom had an excellent start to lead from fellow Poole Juniors, Kate McGregor and Lewis Rumbol. In the end the battle was again between Silvania and Tom, with Silvania winning another close race, with these two boats taking first and second places respectively overall, and Josh third. Overall Results: 1st 70024 Silvania Booth & Jenny House (Poole YC); 2nd 70003 T Robinson & Shaun Mason (Warsash) 3rd 70263 Joshua Rumbol & Tom Davidson (Poole YC). Bill Bacon |
